The State of The Sports Gutter
After a nearly 18 month hiatus during which we could not think of anything to write, The Sports Gutter is back.
To our readers, to the Sports Journalism community at large, and to everyone who has been affected by our absence: we owe you an explanation. More than that, we owe you an apology. And even more than that, we owe you the truth.
It has now been approximately eighteen months since The Sports Gutter published its last piece of original reporting — our September 2024 analysis of the Tyreek Hill traffic stop incident, an article that examined the complex intersections of race, police brutality, and athletic performance with the care and rigor that our readers have come to expect from this publication. We stand by that piece. We believe it represented some of the most important Sports Journalism produced in the modern era.
What we cannot stand by is what followed: silence. Complete, unbroken, eighteen-month silence.
We want to be transparent about what happened, because transparency is the bedrock upon which The Sports Gutter was built, and because our readers deserve nothing less than the full, unvarnished truth.
In the weeks following the Tyreek Hill piece, our editorial board convened to chart the path forward. The discussion was thoughtful, wide-ranging, and conducted with the seriousness of purpose that has always characterized this publication's internal operations. At its conclusion, however, we were forced to confront a difficult reality.
We want to be absolutely clear about this. It was not a matter of resources. It was not a matter of commitment. It was not a matter of courage. It was simply that no one on our staff could come up with a single idea for an article.
Not one.
The Super Bowl came and went. March Madness arrived and departed. The NBA Finals were played. The World Series was contested. The Olympics — the Olympics — took place. An entire cycle of human athletic achievement unfolded before us, and we watched it all from the sideline, mute, paralyzed not by fear or inadequacy but by a complete and total absence of ideas about what to write.
We recognize that this is not acceptable.
This is not acceptable for any publication, but it is especially not acceptable for The Sports Gutter — the premiere sports journalism website on the internet and in the world. Our readers have come to expect a certain caliber of thought leadership from us, a certain depth of analysis that simply cannot be found elsewhere, and we have failed to deliver that analysis for a period of time that demands accountability.
We have conducted an internal review of the circumstances that led to this lapse. The findings were extensive, and we will share them here in the interest of full transparency. The review concluded that the primary cause of our eighteen-month publishing hiatus was that we could not think of anything to write about.
We accept these findings.
But we are not here today to dwell on our failures. We are here to announce our recommitment.
Effective immediately, The Sports Gutter is returning to active publication. We are rededicated. We are reinvigorated. Our editorial staff has undergone a period of reflection that, while unplanned and at times deeply uncomfortable, has ultimately strengthened our resolve to deliver the caliber of sports journalism that the world not only wants but needs.
To the fans, the athletes, and the broader sports community: we are sorry. You needed us, and we were not there. Not because we did not want to be, but because we genuinely could not figure out what to say. We ask only for your patience and your trust as we work to rebuild what we have lost.
To our competitors — we want you to know that The Sports Gutter is back. We hope you enjoyed your eighteen months without us. They are over.
The road ahead will not be easy. There will be challenges. There will be moments of doubt. But we are committed to pushing through those moments with the resolve and determination that have always defined this publication, even during the year and a half when they did not.
The Sports Gutter has always believed that Sports Journalism is the most important and impactful medium of our time. We still believe that. We just, for a little while there, could not think of any specific examples of how to do it.
But that chapter is closed.
We are back. We have things to say. And we will say them — with the eloquence, the insight, and the uncompromising commitment to truth that the world has come to associate with The Sports Gutter name.
We hope you will join us. Again.
